About us
Our story
Our names are Spencer and Benedict McKay and we are brothers sailing together in the 49er class working towards the LA and Brisbane Olympics.
We have been sailing for most of our lives, after dad pushed us off the beach as soon as mum would agree. We both sailed on our own in the early years, with Spencer winning an Optimist State Championship and Benedict podiuming at multiple teams racing regattas and also being one of the youngest members in the NSWIS 420 squad.
After Spencer graduated from the Optimist, we decided to team up in the 420 halfway through 2021. We won our first regatta in the 420, winning every race. From there we went on to win three state titles and one youth national title in the 420. Competing at our first 420 World Championship in 2023, we took a race win on the tricky waters of Rio, and also finished top 10 in the South American 420 Championship.
At the same time, we were also competing for Cranbrook in the schools teams racing. Teaming up as skippers in the Cranbrook First VI, we won three state titles, along with a 1st and 2nd place at Teams Racing Nationals. After Benedict finished school, we moved into the 49er class, first stepping into the 49erFX which is the smaller version of the 49er, which allows lighter teams to be competitive. This provided us with a unique opportunity to sail against the top female skiff sailors in the country, and we placed 3rd at Sail Sydney in 2024.
With the goal of increasing our weight for the 49er (lucky us, not so great for Mum’s grocery bill!), by the start of 2025 we were heavy enough to jump into the bigger Olympic class boat. As the youngest team in the squad, we started training at the national training centre at Middle Harbour with the Australian Sailing Team. With a rigorous gym program and a strict on-water training schedule, our progress skyrocketed as we worked towards our first campaign overseas in 2026. We were proud to achieve 5th under 23 at the 49er Europeans (32nd overall) and 2nd Australian boat, demonstrating our potential as we work towards the 2032 Olympics.
